In a long ago and forgotten age, the great King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table fought against the evil forces of the sorceress Morgana. The battles were brutal, and victory came at price. King Arthur died.

Merlin, in his grief and fearing that the evil Morgana would one day rise again, cast his most powerful spell ever. A spell that bound the souls of Arthur and his valiant knights to that of Morgana’s, if the Sorceress came back…Arthur and his knights would be reborn.

Centuries later, Morgana has returned.

Her first attack was a red fog that traveled around the globe wiping out all modern technology. Computers, automobiles, firearms, and communications went down immediately. Countries fell as the world once again found itself in the Middle Ages.

Her next attack came in a green fog that carried her soldiers. Without modern weapons, the world stood little chance.

Now her forces travel the world searching for Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Morgana seeks to end Arthur’s life before he can claim the magical sword, Excalibur, and unite the people against her.

In a small town in the Pacific Northwest, her forces find him. What happens next is a race against time as Morgana’s forces prepare to descend upon the town in which Arthur grew up, and the army of Guinevere rushes to help him.

All the while, the reborn Arthur searches for the missing Excalibur in an attempt to restore magic to the land once again.

I liked that the bones of Arthurian legend is there without getting too bogged down in it. Because I wasn't that much of a fan of Arthurian legend myself. It feels like a very different enterpretation/reimagining in that some characters sex have been changed and Lancelot has been transformed into something not quite human, and Arthur isn't a nice guy in fact he's a bitter, angry, womanizing drunk. Even Excalibur itself is not as it was in the original tale, it has a corruptive and destructive influence on the wielder's soul. In fact it too has something of a personality that mirrors the bitterness and anger of Arthur's personality.

I'm also glad that this story could have become a post apocalyptic tale but it doesn't, because quite frankly those have been done to death. The post apocalyptic aspects are kept largely in the background and don't overwhelm the story.

Excalibur The Camelot Wars Book One eBook Michael Clary Reviews

This was a thoroughly enjoyable book providing a new spin on the Excalibur/Camelot myth. Anyone who has an interest in those stories will enjoy this modern-day retelling of Arthur's rise to greatness. I particularly liked the characters and how they are developing, all being led by a very intriguing Merlin. There are a few typos and grammatically incorrect words, but nothing that cannot be read through. Book 2 cannot come soon enough!
michael just does not stop. every book he writes is impossible to stop reading. this book, definitely on par with the guardian interviews series takes a different setting, but the same action, humor, and pace is still very present. the spin on an old tale is VERY refreshing after the monotonous story after story in the modern genres, yet keeps current with the times, as does the setting. very much looking forward to the next book in this series
The new take on Arthur and the knights of the round table was really interesting. I did not think I would have liked this book as much as I did. The only aspect I thought was a bit far fetched was how guns (I.e. gun powder) were rendered useless by magic. All the machines run by electricity not working, was believable, but gun powder not so much. Anyway, that's only a minor issue. Clary makes up for it with good storytelling.
This book's rating is very surprising. The idea of it is appealing. Set Arthur in a modern day dystopia and bring in the the characters of legend is original. However, the disjointed writing and poor editing detract from a promising concept.
This was an interesting and entertaining book which seems to be the first in a new storyline for the author. The premise of medieval times and magic descending upon the modern world was good and the characters were interesting. I will be looking for the next book in this line.
This book does not disappoint! The first book in a new series from one of my favorite authors. A damaged hero, a sarcastic wizard, and danger at every turn. What would you do without all electronics? This small town becomes a family and pulls together just when its needed most. I have to confess that Lancelot is my favorite character too. So find your favorite chair and a blanket and settle in for an amazing read!
I've read several versions of the King Arthur stories over the years and I can see that judging from the reviews I'm clearly in the minority.
I did not care for this version at all, and have no desire to pursue books 2 or 3.
In a nutshell, our hero and the Round Table have been reborn into modern times thanks to Morgana a.k.a. the villain. Arthur is not the man he used to be, but his one redeeming quality is he was reborn as human catnip to women.
Single, married, damaged, it doesn't matter, they find him irresistible It's hard to believe he has any strength left to fight the bad guys.
Speaking of bad guys, if your into zombies, you'll love this book.
If they could make a book/movie where Abraham Lincoln became a vampire hunter, why not a book where Arthur fights zombies? If you add in a maniacal sword that talks, and a horse who hates you, what more could you ask for?
Pass the popcorn.
